General diet:
The main diet of the Byzantine people was similar to the preceding Roman and Greek empires that the Byzantine succeeded. The three most common everyday foods were wheat to make bread, olives to make oil, and grapes to make wine. However, because during the reign of the Byzantine Empire the New World was not yet discovered, there were no foods such as potatoes, tomatoes, corn, squash, chocolate, sugar, or soy. Although we know the general foods that the Byzantines consumed, we do not know many of their specific dishes that they ate, because of a lack of cookbooks found. Nonetheless, there were still a few common dishes to be revived, and they are listed below:
-Keftedes
- meatballs made with grain
-Dolmades
- grain and/ or meat stuffed into vegetables or plant leaves
- cooked
-Mousakke
- a layered dish of meat, cheese, pasta, or grain
-Yuvarlakia:
- meat and/ or grain dumplings cooked in broth
